ISSUE 1: BROWNS AND GREYS

We are often asked if we can provide information on our inspirations, the design and development process, manufacturing processes, and materials. Therefore, we have decided to include not just news or events in some of our newsletters but also interesting background material. We want to start with a small series on colors and hope you enjoy reading it.

Color trends are always a bit like gazing into a crystal ball. Even when relying on the most reliable sources for trend forecasting—most notably PANTONE, but also other renowned institutions such as WGSN and Coloro—you can never be sure which colors will truly prevail a year later. It remains to be seen which colors will ultimately be showcased on the major fashion runways of the world, like in London and New York.

In our current limited edition VAGUES collection, we use both subdued color families and livelier contrast colors. During the development of the color palettes, we created our custom DUOTONAL™ 12mm sheets using original Mazzucchelli M49 materials.

We are confident that you have a keen sense of choosing the right color for your customers. Colors and textures are a crucial part of any design. We have summarized a few thoughts on this topic and would like to take you on a journey through various color worlds.

Our ideas are meant to serve as a guide and memory aid for you—especially when we put together some bolder color palettes next time, which are currently very trendy. We hope you enjoy finding inspiration.

In this episode, we focus on a safe bet: shades of brown and grey. These classic color combinations are aimed at those who prefer tried-and-true colors over current trends.

Shades of brown and grey offer an elegant and versatile foundation for any fashion combination with eyewear, ideal for those who appreciate understated sophistication and durability. These colors not only harmonize well with various outfits but also convey a sense of familiarity and reliability.

Even though muted colors or combinations may seem simple at first glance, the finesse of the shades ultimately determines the level of elegance that transforms an initially unassuming color palette into something timeless—and thus far from boring.

GLACIAL MIRAGE
(Our version of PANTONE Dark Shadow)

In addition to the warm color palette, centered around a deep chocolate brown—we call our browns BARISTA REVERIE, RUGGED BARK, and BISCOTTY BEIGE—there is a second color group that impresses with the combination of deep anthracite and dark grey with cooler, lighter grey tones. This cool combination—our SLATE FUSION, GLACIAL MIRAGE, POLAR GREY, and ARCTIC SILVER—is ideal for those who opt for understatement without sacrificing sophistication.

It becomes especially exciting when the lighter grey is not neutral but introduces a tint that adds movement to the otherwise static combination. Since green and blue tones are also very trendy this season—more on this in one of the next issues—shades of slate or a shift towards blue add dynamism, especially when paired with the ever-immortal denim.

At this point, a personal note from me, the designer of BARCELUNETTES. I have been working as a product designer, interior architect, and visual artist for over 35 years, with a special focus on colors and surfaces. Over this relatively long period, I have seen countless trends come and go and have often set the direction in the furniture industry, product design, and homeware myself. I rely on my intuition, experience, and very refined sense of color. Of course, you can simply follow predicted trends without taking much risk. But for me as a designer, the real thrill lies in influencing possible trends to shape the direction myself.

Currently, I am particularly fascinated by the combination of dark browns and solid greys with intense, bright accents. You could also see some strong contrasting combinations on international runways. A classic arrangement with chocolate brown is a deep, coral-like orange, possibly with a hint of pink. This is simply a safe ensemble, as both belong to the warm color world. There is no risk of going wrong here since intense reds and oranges are also among the top trend colors this season. And if this brings back memories of the 70s, it’s not old-fashioned but charmingly nostalgic.

It becomes much more exciting when combined with cool tones. A dark, desaturated, and, above all, not too red-tinted brown provides a rounded base for the presentation of light, clear blue and turquoise tones [warm blue], as well as delicate violet.

Dark brown acts here as a calming backdrop for the sparingly but accentuated accessories. Just as a tone-on-tone combination works—earth tones, Havana patterns, or wood tones—a pair of glasses can also be used as a contrasting color accent in this rather restrained color world, especially in a transparent version, which always interacts with the skin tone behind it. So, there’s no risk of being too loud.

Grey on grey is not necessarily monotonous and boring. Subtle color shifts breathe life into these grey tones, and, as with browns, bold but not garish accent colors provide refreshing counterpoints to the grey. Here, too, it’s a matter of balance.

MATTE COLORS

During the concept and development phase of our limited edition VAGUES collection, we found that the transparent DUOTONAL™ 12mm M49 sheet material developed completely different properties through the depth-graded color transition from dark to light than typical transparent materials. As a result, the colors do not appear predominantly bright but develop a subtle complexity, in the truest sense of the word.

CLEAR COLORS

The VAGUES acetate collection offers both color worlds, a restrained dark color palette inspired by the colors of the coast: desaturated green tones—herbal colors reminiscent of rosemary or sage—and the fine blue-green tones of the turbulent sea. But also fruity floral nuances and, of course, the intense colors of the Mediterranean. Carefully curated for each model.

Eyewear sits precisely at the intersection of fashion and design—it connects both worlds in a fascinating way. On the one hand, it is an independent design product, shaped by specific rules, characterized by special materials and complex manufacturing processes. On the other hand, it fulfills all the requirements of a trendy fashion accessory. Whether as a subtle companion or a bold statement piece, eyewear can complete an outfit while simultaneously highlighting the wearer’s personality. In my work as a designer, the challenge lies in uniting these two aspects and creating eyewear that is both functional and stylish.
